You like the exact same movies I like and you like the exact same tv shows I like and you're so awesome... When did you really get into movies?
That’s pretty neat. Glad you like my taste.
When did I get into movies… I’m just going to turn this into a story, because I like telling this story. When I was about 9, my parents rented Citizen Kane from the video store and together we watched “the greatest film ever made”TM. It was probably the first black and white film I really enjoyed, so 9 year old me thought “hey these old movies aren’t half bad”. So from then I’d start renting more videos from the Classics section of the store. After I’d clearly shown an avid interest in film, for my 10th birthday my parents bought me Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide and 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, both of which I kind of obsessed over, and both of which I still pore over to this day. There was a period where I would only watch movies from the 1001 book, so determined was I to watch “the best” movies out there (I have since recovered from this elitism though…partially). Those books revealed to me just how many weird and wonderful films have been made over the past century and a bit. My discovery of IMDb was also a boon for me, naturally. Since then I’ve maintained my love for watching new-to-me movies and for reading about film. I’m 16 now, and I don’t get quite as much time to watch movies as I did when I was 10, but I try to watch a great variety! My experience of foreign films is shamefully limited, so I hope to see more of those in future… Anyway, that’s my rambly story. Hope it wasn’t too rambly for you.
I agree in terms of the script and characterisation. Th beautiful cinematography, music and costumes DEFINITELY enhanced the quality and tone of the movie, and the wit was definitely lacking. I think the figures were too set on their stereotypes 7/10
It’s funny what a sun-soaked shot of the Seine can do for our perceptions of a film! I guess for a movie based around a love of Paris and a weakness for nostalgia, it plays an important role. Pretty dresses help too, of course…
